Vivian Creek Trail to San Gorgonio Peak • 19-20 miles • 5000+ Gain
At 11, 503 ft, San Gorgonio is the tallest peak in Southern California. I had heard that the hike itself was a grueling, all-day, steep hike … and … it is! It’s a tough one and, depending on your hiking abilities, this hike will take the better part of your day. And if it doesn’t take all day, you may be doing it wrong. Because, what I found along this trail, were lots of little side trips I would love to have explored a bit more including a waterfall that is visible from the trail right before High Creek Camp.
But, back to the beginning. You need a permit from the San Gorgonio Wilderness, specifying which trail you will be using and you can have up to 12 people. The day I was there, a group of 72 people were on the trail, basically leapfrogging with us all day. No one checked the permits but, please, follow the guidelines, to help protect the trail! We got to the TH at 5:30 and had to park in the first (lowest) lot. There are pretty decent, clean pit toilets available and drinking water here. And, so … the adventure began!
I had been told of the horrible steepness in the first few miles and the last mile. And, while the trail is basically all uphill the whole way, I felt the few few weren’t as bad as expected and are certainly doable with breathing breaks. Also, appreciate the scenery while you’re there because this is a trail that will take you through different landscapes. Enjoy the trees & shade!
